چکیده

Climate change and climate variability is increasingly recognized as one of the factors influencing multiple infectious diseases worldwide. During the last decade much evidence has been reported on the relationships between different environmental variables and vector-borne diseases, such as dengue. However, particularly in the Americas, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding the specific relationships between climate variables and the epidemiology of dengue, especially in areas of low endemicity. This is the case in Colombia, where only two previous studies have been reported. For these reasons more studies describing the magnitude of such influences are needed and should be reported. This study describes the relationships between weekly climate variables and the weekly morbidity due to dengue in Cerete (Figure 1), a tropical Caribbean municipality located on the northwestern coast of Colombia This study was carried out during 2003– 2008 in order to establish the significance of the influences of climate on the disease epidemiology. The population of Cerete for the year 2008 was 86 133 inhabitants. Meteorological data (precipitation, relative humidity, and mean temperature) were obtained from the National Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM), and the epidemiological data from the Local Secretary of Health. Climate periods were classified according to the National Oceanographic Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) with regard to

Dengue in an area of the Colombian Caribbean

BACKGROUND In Colombia, dengue is an endemic disease and the four serotypes have been reported. OBJECTIVE To describe the frequency and severity of dengue in an area of the Colombian Caribbean (Department of Cordoba). METHODS A retrospective study was conducted. Two data sources were analysed: The database from the Direction of Health in Córdoba, and clinical registers of patients diagnosed...

Influence of meteorological variables on dengue incidence in the municipality of Arapiraca, Alagoas, Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Meteorological influences along with the lack of basic sanitation has contributed to disease outbreaks, resulting in large socio-economic losses, especially in terms of dengue. This study aimed to evaluate the meteorological influences on the monthly incidence of dengue in Arapiraca-AL, Brazil during 2008-2015. METHODS: We used generalized linear models constructed via logistic ...

Intra- and Interseasonal Autoregressive Prediction of Dengue Outbreaks Using Local Weather and Regional Climate for a Tropical Environment in Colombia

Dengue fever transmission results from complex interactions between the virus, human hosts, and mosquito vectors-all of which are influenced by environmental factors. Predictive models of dengue incidence rate, based on local weather and regional climate parameters, could benefit disease mitigation efforts. Time series of epidemiological and meteorological data for the urban environment of Cali...

Internal travel and risk of dengue transmission in Colombia.

Human behavior plays a key role in the dynamics of dengue transmission. However, research on the relationship between human movement and dengue transmission within endemic countries is limited. From January 2008 to December 2011, the authors of this study conducted a retrospective analysis of imported dengue infections in Bogotá, Colombia. Bogotá is a vector-transmission-free city that is also ...

The effects of climate variables on the outbreak of dengue in Queensland 2008-2009.

Outbreaks of dengue occur in Queensland, Australia nearly every summer. In 2008-2009, there was an unusually large, protracted outbreak of dengue, comprised of 1,200 cases. We investigated the weather variables and their contribution to the 2008-2009 dengue outbreak in Queensland. Case data were obtained from the Communicable Disease Branch of Queensland Health for 2000-2010 for the towns of Ca...
